So what is a typical strip/repair/refinish job look like? This ornamental table is a good example especially since its' top surface had been so abused....
So what can touch-up and refurbishment do for surface? Well, if you are trying to keep a piece "original" it might be just what you want... Take a look at this mid 1980s tea table...
And what about repair work? Well, I think if we can repair the table in this video there isn't too much we can't do with damaged wood...
In this video we explore finish options over existing coatings. Especially read the text that goes with this. So if you have a minute this is a video short well worth looking at.... https://www.youtube.com/shorts/nqeiXeDvNew
So this late 1700s hand crafted desk had probably been restored several times over the years with some conflicting results. The customer asked us to specifically address the very bleached out color of the piece. Take a look....
Can you do several pieces for me in the same order? We get asked that a lot. Sure, we have done single industial orders even with several hundred pieces so your residential needs are easily met. Take a look at this order... time in shop was about 10 days or so....
Do you wonder if we are competitive with our services? Take a look at what one of our "competitors" did to this customer. Original coatings on very old pieces are part of the overall assests of the piece of furniture. Think about this... A piece even from the 1920s has had a coating protecting it for 100 years yet I can show you brand new furniture right in the new showrooms that is failing! Hmmmmm..... so take a look...
The Lane Cedar Chest- Do you own one? There's a really good chance that you or someone you know will own a Lane Cedar Chest. There were nearly 12 million of them produced from 1912 to 1986 and we are not sure how many more millions were made between 1986 and when the company closed it's doors in 2001. This video explores using the unique codes they put on these chests to identify their age. And, if your chest has NO numbers that means it was made between 1912 and 1936 because production coding does not appear until after 1936. Check this out....
So did you ever wonder when modern machine age manufactured furniture began. Well, right after the civil war starting mostly in the 1870s we see the emergence of repeatable manufacturing. Instead of the local woodworker or cabinet maker building an individual piece we see "suites" of dining and bedroom furniture. Take a look at this washstand from that era. Again, this was another fire/smoke damaged piece restored to it's former glory!
Most people have seen white rings on furniture surfaces and a combination of home remedies and professional solutions make those very repairable. What about the dreaded "black ring" though? That is a completely different type of damage which is in the wood itself. Follow along in this short video where the customer has requested that i do a faux blocking on the ring....
So what are the most common damages you see on table tops? RINGS! They can be light or white or as we will see in this video they can be dark or black. Some are caused by water while others, like this one, are caused by water modified chemisty.... take a look....
So do you guys have any experience with exotic furniture or woods??? Well, yes, we do...
